Tips to solve comprehension Questions

(1) Take a cursory glance at the question given

If you look at the questions before reading the passage, you know the aspect of the passage to concentrate on.

Note: Avoid reading the answer choices because it will kill your time.

(2) Read the passage carefully

While reading find out the main points and the arguments that have been given in the passage  .

(3) Examine the writing – style

Generally one question is asked on the writing – style (attitude) of the writer of the passage.

(4) Synonyms and Antonyms Questions

The meaning or the opposite of the word is asked in the context of the passage. So, don’t go for the meaning blindly.

Let’s recapitulate what is generally looked for in the comprehension questions.

(i) Main Idea of the passage:– This idea forms the nucleus around which words and sentences are reconstructed. Get to the root of this idea.

(ii) Attitude of the writer:– This is also important, because the same sentence carries a different meaning if looked at in isolation.

(iii) Pre- conceived Notions:– It is very important to categorically see what the writer says and what he does not. This will be possible if we don’t operate with unnecessary assumptions.

(iv) Implied meaning of the passage: Often passage carries meaning beyond the literal one. You should have an insight sharp enough to penetrate the literal layer.

The above suggestions are, of course, a homework and have to do with cultivation in due process. This will be immensely helpful for you in solving the questions based on comprehension. And for this you have to develop your vocabulary and sentence framing.
